The Load Delivered. The Real Trucker Never Got Paid.

A new broker booked a load a few weeks back. Nothing about it felt unusual. The carrier had an MC number, insurance on file, and a signed packet. The rate was fair. The truck showed up, the freight got picked up, and a day later it delivered. If you stopped the story right there it would look like a perfect load.

Then the phone rang. It was a driver nobody had ever spoken to, from a company nobody had ever heard of, asking a simple question. Who is paying me for this load?

That is double brokering. The "carrier" that signed the rate con never put a truck on the load. They took the booking, handed the freight to a completely different trucking company, collected the payment, and disappeared. The company that actually burned the fuel got nothing. And now the broker is stuck in the middle of it, with an angry trucker on one line, a shipper asking questions on the other, and a very real chance of paying for the same load twice.

Why new brokers are the favorite target

Here is the uncomfortable part. The people running these schemes watch the FMCSA registrations the same way sales people do. A brokerage that got its authority three weeks ago is exactly who they want to call. New brokers are hungry, they answer every call, they book fast, and they have not been burned yet. The fraudsters know the paperwork will pass a quick glance, because they have done this hundreds of times and you are doing it for the first time.

It is not stupidity. It is experience they have and you do not.

The signs that were there the whole time

When you go back through a double brokered load after the damage is done, the clues are almost always sitting right there in the file. These are the ones we see over and over.

What this actually costs

The money is the obvious part, and it is bad enough. Pay the fake carrier, then face the real one demanding payment too, and a small brokerage can lose a month of profit on one load. But the quieter damage is worse. The shipper who trusted you with that freight watched you hand it to a stranger. Some of them do not call again. For a brokerage that is three months old, one burned shipper can be the whole book of business.

The fix is boring, and that is the point

Nobody catches double brokering with instinct. You catch it by checking the same things on every single carrier, every single time, before the truck is booked. Does the contact info match the federal record. Does the signer appear on the authority. Do the documents match their labels. Did the vetting come back clean. It is tedious, which is exactly why tired brokers skip it at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly why the fraudsters count on that.

That is the reason we built carrier vetting into Haulan the way we did. Every carrier gets checked against the federal record automatically, every packet gets flagged when something does not line up, and the boring part happens on every load whether you are fresh or exhausted. The brokers using it did not get less trusting. They just stopped having to rely on trust.

If you are new to brokering, be a little paranoid. The load that looks perfect is the one that deserves a second look.

Stop booking bad carriers.

Haulan vets every carrier, blocks double brokers, and runs your onboarding, rate cons, and invoices in one place.
